David Plastik: The Unluckiest Poker Player in the World
We have used such title for this article not only to catch your attention but also because it was a fact. Nobody actually called him the unluckiest poker player in the world… Nobody but him… Poker professional David Plastik was heard to have uttered that he was the unluckiest player in the world during his participation in a 2002 World Series of Poker event. He was heard uttering such phrase after being defeated by poker professional Barry Greenstein. Prior to such game, he was already known to win in smaller games only. He made money finishes but he never really had achievements that would equal to the achievements of other poker giants.
Born in 1964 in Queens, New Jersey, David Plastik obtained his college degree from the University of Hartford, which is located in Connecticut. He was already earning money when he was only a teenager by taking pictures of rock and roll bands and selling them to magazines and other publications. From New Jersey, he relocated to Los Angeles, California to work for his father's business as a sales representative. While he was working in the field of sales, he discovered his competitiveness. It was also during this time that he started playing poker and it was his competitiveness that prompted him to become better and better in playing poker. He started playing professional poker by participating in games conducted at the Commerce Casino. He was playing really well and he knew that he had a bright future in the gambling industry.
It was in 1995 that David Plastik really began his professional career in poker. He started to join tournaments in 1997. Before he knew it, he already generated a total of US$580,000 poker winnings, wherein approximately US$100,000 of it was earned in a single month alone. This inspired him more to pursue his dream of becoming successful in such field. Well, it did not seem like he was an unlucky poker player, right?
David Plastik has always been lucky. It's just that he never had major poker victories and that was what he always wanted. He thought of himself as the unluckiest poker player in the world but then, in 2005, such description of him seemed not to fit him anymore.
David Plastik joined the seventh event conducted at the Bellagio Five Diamond World Poker Classic, which was a tournament that formed part of the World Poker Tour. After winning first place, Jack McClelland, who was the tournament director, announced that the winner had not experienced winning a poker tournament since 1947. We don't really know whether David Plastik was insulted by such remark or not, but what we know is that he won the title, US$212,730 and a seat to the World Poker Tour Championship that was held in April 2006 at the Bellagio Casino.
Yes, we don't know if David Plastik was offended with how his victory in 2005 was announced. Nonetheless, we are sure that he has stopped calling himself the unluckiest poker player in the world.
